A lot of you have probably been told to put the ball on your finger tips when shooting...because coaches say it gives you good control. I could not disagree more. The best player to do this technique with shooting was Shaq..and let’s just look at the numbers..for his career he shot 52.7% from the free throw line.🤦🏼‍♂️ The other thing I hear a lot is “get the ball off of your PALM.” “Let there be air between the ball and your palm.” Now I believe this is sort of true..you don’t want to fully palm the ball, but you don’t want too much space between the ball and your palm. I shouldn’t be able to watch from the stands or look at you shoot from like 10-15 feet away and really notice the air between the ball and your palm.

I tell my players to actually have the ball on their finger pads of their fingers...AND the base of my fingers/upper part of my palm. That’s where the ball rests. You should use your palm as a level platform to cup the ball.

A good way to see how YOU should grip the ball is put the ball out in front of u, let it fall out of your hand and scoop it up as it bounces off the ground. How you grab that ball and how it sits in your hand, that’s how you should grip it. Your grip should be natural and the ball should be able to sit in your hand and YOU can move it around without the ball falling out of your hand.

If you look at how I hold the ball you can see in the top right corner there is a little air between my palm and the ball, not much, but there is some, so I agree it doesn’t rest entirely on my palm, but there is less than half an inch of air between my palm and the ball. This allows for me to have ultimate control especially by having my hand in the middle of the ball. Having a comfortable grip and one that gives you ultimate control is crucial when shooting. If you can’t hold the ball with one hand and go through your shooting form without it falling out of your hands, then you need to change how you grip the ball.
