Shawn Porter Edges Yordenis Ugas In Split Decision

Shawn Porter edged Yordenis Ugas in what appeared, to the naked eye, to be a one-sided match favoring Ugas.  Ugas appeared to have caught the edge on Porter in the early rounds, backing him into the corner each round, and connecting with some big blows.  Porter also connected on some sharp jabs and shots to the body, however Ugas was clearly dominating from rounds 2-8.  Porter was able to continue to connect some very solid jabs, but the overall energy of the fight seemed to favor Ugas as he would put Porter through flurries of blows against the ropes, throughout the fight.  It appeared that Porter struggled with Ugas’ size all night long.

Ugas knocked Porter down in round 10, and really got the crown going as he began to taunt Porter. Porter was able to stumble Ugas with a few combos in rounds 11, but it wasn’t enough to knock Ugas out.

Porter won in a split decision and we are here to report that the Dignity Health Sports Park crowd (Carson, CA) definitely was surprised and not pleased with the decision.

Nonetheless, congrats to the reigning champ, Shawn Porter!

Quotes

SHAWN PORTER

"The crowd was expecting a big brawl, but that's not the way this fight needed to go tonight. That style that we used left the fight close. We got the win, we're still champion and we're looking forward to what is next.

"The weight cut didn't effect me at all. I was on my toes all night. I was very focused the entire fight and just listening to my corner."

"We wanted to out box him and eventually turn it on and press him. But my dad did not think that was the smartest way to win the fight. We fought this way for 12 rounds and no one has ever seen that from me before.

"I'm a little frustrated that I wasn't able to get to the body as much as I wanted or as much as we had planned. As the clock ticks, you have to do what's working. Tonight the foot movement was working and it made Ugas have to reset.

"We fought a good smart fight tonight. I was consistent and I thought we won a majority of the rounds.

YORDENIS UGAS

"There's no doubt about it, I was robbed tonight. After the first round I figured him out and dominated the fight. He had no answer when I was pushing him back. I dominated the fight in my opinion.

"I showed tonight that I belong with the elite fighters at welterweight. All I can say is that I'm ready to fight any of the top names in the division. I'll be back."
